Faith as a Mustard Seed
Faith as a Mustard Seed
“He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20 (NIV)
Have you ever seen just how small an actual mustard seed is? Let me tell you, they are really small. I know because I keep a packet of them in my Bible for reference.
The reason I do that is because of this verse in the book of Matthew that tells me that all I have to do is activate a little faith, the faith the size of a mustard seed, and say to whatever mountain (this often impenetrable mass) that is in my life to move and it must. Hallelujah!
And then it goes on to say that NOTHING will be impossible for me!!!
So as I ponder that verse again today, I want you to, as I am, think about what mountain is in your life that you want to have removed.
When I was in my pre-teens and first read this scripture, I always thought that it was so cool that God wasn’t requiring a lot of faith from me in order to get things to move or change in my life. If I am honest with you, and I strive to be, I looked at this scripture as a make-a-wish verse…you know, whatever I wanted I could have not really realizing what was actually required of me.
At that time, I never took the time to actually examine the whys of the actual promise contained in the verse I just knew that I liked the end result and was thankful that God had that as a promise for me.
But then as I have gotten older and wiser (I’d like to think) in my walk with Christ I have come to realize the reason for that was that God knew that there would be times in my life when it would be so hard for me to actually do the little that was required.
Some things in life are just so difficult that God knew that it would take all that I had left in me in order for me to just get that tiniest bit of faith I needed in order to get that thing removed from my life.
Do you know what I am talking about?
I am speaking about those trials and tribulations that knock you to your core and you don’t have anything left to give in order to separate yourself from them. You want that thing gone, but you have less than nothing left in you to actually get it to move.
That is what I am speaking about…those hard mountains that are so engrained in your life that the only way for you to be free is for you to find a way to gather just a little bit of faith in order to have big things happen in your life.
In essence that is what this scripture is talking about. God is simply saying is that if I/you can just muster up this tiny little morsel of faith, stand back and watch Him do the miraculous for me/you. That big mountain in my life can MOVE.
He just needed us to just do a little and He would do a whole lot.
Isn’t that great?!
The All-Seeing Father knew that some things in our lives would have to be removed in order for us to move to our next step in our journey with Christ. And so by showing us that all we need to do is activate a little faith, He is illustrating that nothing will be impossible for us so long as we believe.
How great it is that God loves us so much that He won’t discount a blessing from us just because our faith content is sometimes low?
If we can just gather a little faith, we can stand back and watch our Savior MOVE!!!
Heavenly Father, there aren’t words to properly articulate just how wonderful I think You are. Thank you that even in my lowest You aim to still bless me. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen
